Staking for Impact: How Blockchain can Work for Refugees
When humanitarian aid meets blockchain infrastructure, funding becomes perpetual — and every staked token becomes a lifeline.

Overview
Giga is a joint initiative between UNICEF and the International Telecommunication Union with an ambitious mandate: connect every school on Earth to the internet. Operating across dozens of countries, Giga maps school connectivity gaps, mobilises public and private investment, and builds the digital infrastructure required to deliver educational access at scale.
Connecting the world's schools demands more than traditional infrastructure thinking. Giga needed to explore whether blockchain technology could support transparent funding flows, decentralised connectivity solutions, and verifiable impact tracking—but lacked a structured environment to engage the right ecosystem partners.
Our Role
STORM Partners was engaged to bring Giga into Lightningbox, our structured blockchain sandbox for institutional innovation. We were mandated to connect their team with enterprise-grade blockchain integrators and facilitate direct strategic dialogue with infrastructure providers at Decentral House Geneva.
SANDBOX INTEGRATION AND FRAMEWORK DESIGN
Onboarded Giga as an Impact Innovator within Lightningbox, providing structured methodology to evaluate blockchain applications for global connectivity.
ECOSYSTEM PARTNER CURATION AND MATCHING
Connected Giga with vetted enterprise blockchain integrators spanning payments, custody, and legal infrastructure sectors.
STRATEGIC CONVENING AND FACILITATION
Hosted dedicated roundtable sessions at Decentral House Geneva, enabling direct dialogue between UNICEF/ITU leadership and blockchain infrastructure providers.
The Result
This engagement proves STORM Partners' capacity to convene UN-level institutional actors within rigorous blockchain innovation frameworks. We bridge the gap between global development mandates and decentralised technology infrastructure, facilitating dialogue that traditional consultancies cannot access or structure.
